Travelling to Kenya with a child is an easy way
BLOGTo Kenya with a child? Easy!
– Mom, wake up, we’re going to see cheetahs today!
I open my eyes in bewilderment (what are the cheetahs at 5 am?) and realize: Ulyana and I are in Kenya. And now we really are going on a safari. To look at the cheetahs!
I have been dreaming of showing Uliana “Disneyland”, but so far it hasn’t worked out somehow. Many people have been to Disneyland, but only a select few have seen live lions, giraffes and elephants in their natural habitat, and certainly only a few four-year-old European children among them.
To visit Kenya and soak in the incredible energy of the pristine nature combined with truly luxurious service is incredible! Looking back, I realize that this trip filled me with a fantastic desire to live and create, love and work, create new out-of-the-box tours and travel even more myself.
And what a delight it was for the child to see their favourite characters from the animated film “The Lion King”… But first things first!
CONTRASTS IN THE HEART OF AFRICA
We flew with my favorite airline, Turkish Airlines, connecting in Istanbul and flying to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. I would not say that the flight was difficult (I was quite comfortable with a four-year-old child), but it was a night flight.
Nairobi was immediately stunned by contrasts. A modern metropolis with skyscrapers, business centres and luxury cars – and yet here are locals in national dress, small shops and carts pulled by furry donkeys.
Later I understood that all Kenya is full of contrasts. And that is its beauty! Wild savannah and authentic Masai villages not far from the multimillion metropolis, unattractive hotels hidden in the bushes – and excellent service, rare even for five-star European counterparts, exotic fruit straight from the trees – and cuisine from the masters of gastronomy.
MAASAI MARA, SAFARI AND MORE
We spent the first few days at OLONANA CAMP. The hotel is located on the territory of the legendary Maasai Mara reserve, which is a logical continuation of the Serengeti National Park. There we plunged into the inexpressible atmosphere of the African savannah, but rested from the safari in incredibly comfortable conditions.
Morning in the savanna starts early, so I had to get up as early as 5 am, but even my four-year-old daughter woke up bright and early – so hurried to meet with wild animals!
Every day we climbed into an open buggy and drove out into the savannah to admire elephants, lions, rhinos, antelopes and other inhabitants of the reserve. And we didn’t see them from afar, when you don’t understand whether they are animals or you just want to see them so much that you take wishful thinking for reality.
The inhabitants of the Maasai Mara are not afraid of people: they let the vehicles with the safari participants within a few meters of each other and continue their habitual way of life. I even managed to shoot a video with a grandiose and piquant scene: the lions mating is really something!
We also visited an authentic Masai village, where we got acquainted with the traditions of this proud and beautiful people, watched the picturesque national dances and even tried to make fire the classical way – oh, and my palms were burning from rubbing the planks!
And, of course, we bought lots of souvenirs. By the way, these were the only extra expenses during the tour – we didn’t have to spend a penny more.
BIG FAMILY GIRAFFE MANOR BOUTIQUE HOTEL
Many people have heard about the unique hotel with giraffes GIRAFFE MANOR, but no photo or video can capture the atmosphere there. All the inhabitants of the hotel (administration, staff and even the giraffes) are one big family. This feeling of togetherness, love and warmth is also conveyed to the guests. Feel at home in the heart of Africa? Easily!
The low-key hotel is built in typical colonial style (Kenya is an ex-colony of Great Britain). Inside, the GIRAFFE MANOR is stunningly aristocratic and luxurious in a British way, all reminiscent of the fact that it was once the property of an English earl family.
British aristocrats rescued weak and sick giraffes by nursing, treating and releasing them into the wild. Now this noble work is continued by the hotel staff. So, GIRAFFE MANOR – it’s not a zoo with its inherent oppressive atmosphere, but the house of a large friendly family, of which the giraffes are full members. The animals are very friendly to hotel guests: they eat from their hands and pose for photos together.
Special warm words deserve the hotel staff – the service is fantastic. The staff knows every guest by name, remembers his preferences (the day after arrival – you tea with herbs, as always?), and if necessary, can turn into invisible. We didn’t even notice how and when the royal beds are made in the evenings and canopies are placed over them. And what wonderful dishes are served there!
Yes, GIRAFFE MANOR is an expensive pleasure, but anyone who has been there will not regret a single penny spent. And it also warms one’s heart to think that money was spent not only for one’s own pleasure, but also for a good cause – saving sick giraffes.
Instead of a postscript.
I have been developing this destination for a long time because I believe that exclusive tours to Africa have a grand future in tourism. Kenya has everything that the most discerning tourist needs: the wilderness of the Maasai Mara, unforgettable safaris among wild animals and the opportunity to soak up their pristine energy, colorful villages of local residents, guaranteed security, excellent service, fine cuisine and even personal contact with giraffes.
The best time to visit this country is in summer, when animals migrate to Kenya en masse to hide in the tall grass of the Maasai Mara to escape the stifling heat. So, come on – I promise: the energy and impressions received on the trip will last a long time. You will feel reborn, renewed, ready to conquer new peaks in business and all areas of life!
